Pilot Rock Rocket Baseball Expectations
1. Representation of Pilot Rock Rocket Baseball, Pilot Rock School District, and the Pilot Rock Community is of the utmost importance to the program and we will strive to present our program in a positive manner at all times.
2. Attendance is mandatory at school, practices, and games.
A. A student who is absent for school all day for any reason will not be allowed to participate in school related activities on that day or evening. Students absent any portion of the day will not participate in school-related activities or athletics unless pre-arranged. This applies to all athletes.
B. In case of illness or emergency the head coach will need to be notified as soon as possible. If the head coach can not be reached then an assistant coach will need to be notified. If coaches can not be reached then a team captain should be notified.
C. Multiple unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team.
D. Excused absences because of illness or emergency will need to be made up before the next game in order to participate. Even though excused absences will sometimes occur, the rest of the team is still working to improve and therefore an alternative workout will need to be completed prior to participating in games.
3. Riding the bus is mandatory to and from all contests unless released to the players’ parents of another adult pre-approved by the principal. Verbal and written consent must be given to a coach by the parent or guardian before they are released.
4. Rosters will be decided by the coaching staff. These decisions will be made by where an athlete best fits into the program for maximum playing time and success. We want to win at the varsity level. That may mean that there are some players with special talents that can help the varsity. For example, some players may play in varsity games as runners or pitchers only. At other times, possibly only nine players will play in varsity games. Baseball is a unique sport where managerial decisions are often questioned. Not everyone will agree with coaching decisions, but these decisions will be made by the coaching staff with the best interest of the team in mind. Rosters are not set in stone and will vary from game to game and week to week. A player who starts on junior varsity may end up playing varsity and a player that starts on varsity may end up playing junior varsity. Team roles will be communicated to players by the head coach as best as possible.
A. Varsity Objectives

potential
2. Allow athletes the chance to excel
3. Learn to set goals and strive to achieve them
4. Be a role model for younger athletes
5. Realize that the main focus is to be successful
B. Junior Varsity Objectives
1. Further develop skills of the athlete
2. Increase the intensity of the competition
3. Prepare for the varsity level
4. Place emphasis on winning, but not to the extent of the varsity level
5. Varsity letters, the “R”, will be awarded to any player who shall have participated in ½ of the varsity baseball games played, or shall have played in a state-playoff, or upon recommendation of the coach. In addition to participating in games, players will need to complete a minimum of 8 hours of community service dedicated to Pilot Rock Rocket baseball. These hours can be completed by field maintenance, umpiring youth games, assisting youth teams, participating in youth camps, etc. There will be many opportunities throughout the season for this requirement to be fulfilled. It is one of our objectives to serve others first. This is a way to give back to Pilot Rock Baseball and to contribute to the future of the program.
6. Proper equipment is mandatory during all practices and games. An equipment list will be provided to players. Players need to purchase their own socks, belts, and hats. Socks and belts must be Rocket blue and are available at Dean’s in Pendleton. Hats will be pre-ordered through Dean’s. If a player cannot come up with the proper equipment they should contact the coaches who usually have extras.
7. Communication is important for Pilot Rock baseball to achieve success. This includes coaching staff, players, and parents together. The coaching staff will do their best to communicate with players their role on the team. Although not everyone will agree on team roles, the coaching staff will put the success of the team first and foremost. If players need to initiate communication with the coaching staff they should do so after practices or games. If parents wish to initiate communication with the head coach they should set-up a time for a meeting to be held, which should not be directly after a game.
